Veterans War Memorial in Baton Rough
Back to Full Blog

I ventured out yesterday to see the sights, turns out there is only one. But it happened to be a good one.
The Veterans Memorial and museum has a $3,000,000 model collection of boats, planes and other military machines.
They were really nice, a little more than my model car collection when I was a kid!

They were very serious about this, they had "keep your kids under controll" signs all over the place.

This is Mr.Leroy, he actually served on The Kidd when he was a young man. He said he was a kid on the Kidd. He was a really nice guy and he knew all about this boat. If you look next to him there is a picture of him on the boat and his service picture.
He said when he was in the Navy, no one would give him the time of day, and now
"I'm as famous as John Wayne". I shook his hand and thanked him for his service to our country, I told him about my Dad, and his service in WWII and Pearl Harbor, He was glad to hear about his brother in arms.. (chokes me up a little)

This is the USS KIDD, Fletcher class destroyer, launched 1943 and has been all over the world, The Kidd was named after Rear Admiral Isaac C Kidd who was killed on the Arizona during the surprise attack at Pearl Harbor.
It looks like it is drydocked, but the Mississippi river rises 42 feet during different times of the year, sometimes it's a float and sometimes it just sits in the craddle, says
Mr.Leroy.

Imagine the explosion this depth charge made when it went off in the water! It looks like a giant hand grenade.

Imagin, depth charges exploding trying to destroy submarines, these big guns thundering away at the Japanese planes Strafing the boat with 50mm guns! it must have been a crap your pants experience! Mr.Leroy said that when the big guns went off it actually re-coiled the boat back and forth!

Like I said, the battles must have scared the crap out of you!
These boys even shared the reading room experience!
I never asked why one seat was red, I did notice that everything was organized according to class, as it was in the the days of Christopher Columbus...
As evidence here, not one single square inch of space was wasted on the ship!

The Mighty Mississippi, and that big ass bridge I had to cross to get here! That darn bridge gave me the heebie-jeebies all the way over and I knew I had to cross back over it when I left the Memorial.. they towed the KIDD in this river to get it here, with a bigger boat that's how deap the Mississippi river is...!

Well said... there was a bunch of these, but I liked this one the best so I posted it.

This is the old court house, I never did find the new one, but man it must be something.
The city had references to the "Kingfish" all over town and signs that said " Huey P Long lives because Baton Rough Lives".
It is said that Governor Long used to answer the phone with "Kingfish?"

are you done? I have been back twice and getting more each time

Cool stuff! My Dad ventured to ole Buffalo when I was there and we did a Naval Ship tour thingie. Was super cool - but we didn't get the old Naval dudes on the ship to tell cool stories. how fun!!!!!!!

Obviously Mr. Leroy was on the boat during war time (unless they did boy toy military games with the big guns). Which war?

At least Baton Rouge has something more than the story behind the name and New Orleans (oh yeah, and Meg's funny ass)

Yes, it was cool and Mr. Leroy was the real thing and I had a good time talking to him, he is a WWII veteran and that makes him my fathers Brother in arms.
When I went down below on the ship it was air conditioned, I said I'll bet that wasn't there when you were on this boat, he said it was so hot in that boat that they would go to the deck even during an attact to get air!

J? I am truely amazed!
I love these pictures but I especially love you meeting with one of Daddy's Comrades in Arms!!!

I love it! And I know you love it!
Daddy is so proud of you searching out these historical events and physical proof that WWII is real and not just in the history books!!
There are people out there and we still need to hear their stories!
Daddy's voice still speaks to us through your investigations and travels.

Keep them coming Young J!
Love you and miss you,
Oscar Sue!
